Junior World Rally Champion Emil Bergkvist starts the season in Rally Sweden

Last year, Emil Bergkvist from Sweden became the Junior World Rally Champion and won his very own Ford Fiesta R5 along with tires and fuel for the WRC2 championship in 2019. Now Emil and the co-driver Patrik Barth are starting this year's season when they run their home race Rally Sweden in Värmland together with J Motorsport.

– It feels very motivating and a bit tense, says Emil.

– It feels like I have good possibilities with a good car, the team and my co-driver Patrik Barth. There are also many stages that we drove earlier, so it feels like we have good knowledge of the rally.

Emil has previously competed in the WRC2 championship in another car brand, and had two tough seasons with some technical problems and other issues. Now he is back in a four-wheel drive car, and hopes to bring the experiences from the tough years with him.

– What feel safes about this is that I had two seasons in this type of car before. But it will be a challenge to jump straight into a new car. But I have made all the preparations I can with a test before the competition and went down to the factory in Poland to get to know the car, Emil continues.

This year's WRC2 field is the toughest in Rally Sweden for many years. Among other things, Emil will meet reigning rallycross world champion Johan Kristoffersson, and the former Rally Sweden winner Patrik Flodin. But Emil is aiming high in the comeback.

– There are over 10 drivers in the class who have a chance on the podium. Our main goal is to have a trouble-free competition and work our way into the competition, and we will see how far it is takes us. If we were to reach the top five, I would be happy, if we would come to the podium it would have been gold. But the most important thing is to get a trouble-free competition and follow our plan, Emil concludes.
